OAKLAND, Feb. 19, 2020 – After the Game: A 20 Year Look at Three Former Athletes, a new feature-length sports documentary profiling the long-term benefits of athletics on young women, announced today the details of the film’s world premiere.
The film will premiere on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at the Piedmont Theatre in Oakland, California. Showtime will be 7:30 pm, with a short post-film discussion planned with the filmmakers after the 85-minute film.
After the Game: A 20 Year Look at Three Former Athletes follows three young women on a 1999 collegiate basketball team as they test their limits to reach their athletic potential and seek NCAA glory at a small university. Nearly 20 years later, these same women each find themselves applying lessons learned from their playing days to different professional off-the-court challenges today. Weaving together the stories of coaches and players, After the Game gives perspective into the world of small-time college athletics and shines a light on the relationship between sports participation and professional success.
While the documentary itself takes place in Orange County, California, the producers selected Oakland as the site for the world premiere due to their own connection to the East Bay city – both are long-time residents and actively involved in the local creative community. They commuted back and forth between Oakland and Orange County throughout production.

The filmmakers timed the premiere to coincide with NCAA March Madness, the highly-popular annual single-elimination college basketball tournament.
Additional screenings are currently being planned nationwide for the film, but there is great enthusiasm for the premiere of this 20-years-in-the-making documentary.
“We’ve been working on this project an extremely long time, and to see it finally come to life, in front of a large audience, is a feeling beyond words. There is a great deal of excitement from our audience to see this film and their wait is nearly over,” said the film’s director and co-producer April Abeyta.
The post-film discussion will be moderated by Mari Zumbro of Modern Sports, a Bay Area-based organization dedicated to bringing together a community of people that enjoy watching women’s sports. The panel will include director/producer April Abeyta and additional to-be-announced guests.

ABOUT AFTER THE GAME
After the Game: A 20 Year Look at Three Former Athletes is a coming-of-age saga of two college women’s basketball players and their coach at a small liberal arts college. In her quest to understand why women who play competitive sports tend to have success in their professional careers, director April J. Abeyta presents an intimate, character-driven film that spans nearly 20 years. Audiences see the evolution of these three characters as the film blends footage from 1999, while they were part of the basketball team, with today, as they face new career challenges.
